Steel Winds sits on the shores of Lake Eerie, on top of a brownfield left behind by an abandoned steel mill.  The fourteen 2.5 MW wind turbines in Lackawanna, NY generate up to 50 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year – enough to power approximately 9,000 New York homes – and help bring the state closer to the goal of 30% renewable energy sources by 2015 (30 x 15).  At Steel Winds, First Wind is harvesting the famous winds of the Great Lakes and making productive use of land unsuitable for most other purposes.
